As of late 2024 or early 2025, some things can be said about Y2Mate (or y2mate.com), and almost all of it is bad.
What this site did
Y2Mate helped many users download videos from YouTube among other streaming platforms. Using Y2Mate is relatively easy as you just had to input a link to the desired video, select the format you wanted (MP4 or MP3), and download an audio or video file of the desired content.
Y2Mate was convenient because it had everything to do with video/audio downloading done on the website. There was no other added time in installing other software or extensions. You could just go to the site and do everything there. Because of this convenience, streaming ripping was a very mainstream practice.
Why it was problematic
Y2Mate had many issues, the most major of which was copyright infringement. Especially in the United States, downloading copyright protected content such as music from YouTube streams is a violation of copyright law. Doing this using Y2Mate is illegal as YouTube allows you to download content without needing to pay.
The site had many ads which could even lead to you downloading malware. Because of these many ads and the ease of using the site, many people believed that it was a phishing site. Using this site was a huge breach of privacy and security as you had no idea if you had just downloaded a virus to your computer. With all of these risks, the site was just a huge threat to users.
What changed recently
Over the past few months, there have been reports that copyright organizations plan on suing Y2Mate due to the copyright violations. As of now, these are just reports, and it is very new to the system, as reports have only surfaced in the past few weeks. There are other reports that Y2Mate has been completely shut down by these organizations. This was most recently reported in October of 2025.
This shutdown is part of a crackdown from the music industry in efforts to stop piracy through ‘stream ripping’.

Consequently, some Y2Mate domains (and clones) have been taken down, changed ownership, or have become inactive/blocked.

What this means for you (and right now) /2024 :
This Y2Mate service is no longer reliable. Many of its domains have been shut down or taken over, so ‘official’ Y2Mate.com doesn’t seem to be working.
The legal and security concerns surrounding this are high. Even if this site is clone/ unoriginal, downloading, copyrighted content is illegal in numerous jurisdictions, and this site may be filled with malware, scams, or invasive advertisements.
It is safer to avoid this. Due to the shutdown, and the legal and ethical concerns surrounding this, using Y2Mate is very unstable and high risk.
If you wish, I could look for working alternatives to Y2Mate for 2025. Alternatives I know to at least attempt to sidestep piracy and have a ‘safer’ reputation (no guarantees though)
